Modern Beachside Kitchen by Michelle Flemons

Interior designer Michelle Flemons gives us a few tips on how create a modern beachside kitchen.

It’s not surprising that with our proximity to the Pacific Ocean, many BC homeowners are drawn to a West Coast design aesthetic. As this featured townhouse is just steps from the ocean in West Vancouver, both the homeowner and I were on the same page. Think: light, fresh, inviting, with hints of stylish personality.

Following are a few tips to get the modern West Coast look.

1.  A mix of woods & whites.

The kitchen cabinetry was the first design decision that was made.  We wanted a fresh new look without being cold or overly modernist.  The combination of warm wood cabinet doors and high gloss uppers was the perfect  marriage.  With the expert craftsmanship of Quality Cabinets, the results are stunning.

2. Clean & Simple Lines.

Clean, seamless elements will maximize visual space in any room.  Therefore, custom flat slab cabinetry, fully-integrated appliances, and hidden pulls were incorporated into the design.  Clear acrylic stools were chosen to keep the look light and airy.

3. Floating Shelves.

It is important to incorporate open space to break up wall-to-wall cabinetry.  Floating shelves accomplish this task and are also a great opportunity to showcase beautiful tablewear and other stylish accessories.

4. Environmental mindfulness.

Did you spot the inset organics stainless steel waste bin?  It’s a brilliant product for us West Coasters who are passionate about composting.  As a bonus, it gets the green can off the counter, reduces fruit flies, and makes composting a little sleeker and sexier.

5. A touch of Pizzaz

Every space needs a show-stopping element to achieve that “wow” factor.  In this kitchen it is the extraordinary backsplash.  The glass tiles have an ethereal quality and the herringbone pattern is timeless.

 Finally…set the table

My stylist, Tina Barkley, and I used the space’s neutral colour palette with varying hues of blue as our inspiration and we carried this vision into the table décor.  Whimsy ferns placed in gold accented pottery were the perfect addition to complete the curated, breezy ambience.
